WD Lawrence was a prominent shipyard owner, businessman, and politician.
He built the largest sailing vessel up to that time in 1874. Maitland was a prosperous seaport and shipyard. All at a time when Nova Scotia was becoming part of Canada but was also trying to find out if they could carry on without being a part of a Dominion.
Sadly, within 30 years, technology put sailing ships out of the main shipping methods. By 1914, the vast amount of shipping was by steam and coal fired ships.
This museum had been closed but luckily this summer it reopened.
